Consulting Engineers Corp. has worked in the structural engineering field for nearly 50 years. In that time we have been able to develop and grow in our skills, knowledge, and abilities with retrofitting. Here in California, earthquakes and natural disasters are inevitable, so it only makes sense that when you invest in a form of real estate, whether it be a commercial building, industrial space, or a multi-unit housing development, it ought to be able to withstand the storm that’s coming.
While there’s no honest way to guarantee the prevention of damage from natural disasters, there are ways to prepare for it, and that’s exactly what retrofitting does. Retrofitting, at the root of it, is adding additional features to something that did not originally have them. In most cases, real estate throughout big cities like LA, San Diego, Santa Clara, and the like, are going to be older. Because of that, you need a structural engineer to come in, enhance them, and leave you with a building that you can feel comfortable in when an earthquake hits.
We offer these services to a few different types of real estate. Below are the three main types of retrofitting that we offer here at Consulting Engineers Corp. Check them out so that you can get a better idea of what we can provide you with.
One of the services that we offer is known as seismic retrofitting. This is the process of enhancing structures that already exist. This procedure allows for your building to be more resistant to any ground motion, soil failure, or seismic activity that happens when an earthquake strikes.
Seismic codes didn’t exist until the late 1960s, which leaves most of the commercial buildings, industrial spaces, and multi-unit housing developments out of code. Whether you’re aware of it or not, these types of codes are something that will not only protect your investment but will protect the lives of any individuals who are working or visiting your location.
Consulting Engineers Corp. is able to provide you with the best of both worlds by leaving your building up to code, incredibly sound, and much more affordable than rebuilding. If you’re interested in learning more about these services, contact us today.
Soft Story Retrofitting
The other service that we offer is known as soft story retrofitting. This is a service that is specifically designed for a soft-story building. Soft-story buildings are multi-story buildings that have one or more floors that will have windows, doors, or other unobstructed spaces where a wall would serve as support in the instance that an earthquake was to happen.
This is most common for buildings that were built in 1979 and the years prior, but it can still happen with certain designs today. These spaces, unfortunately, are much more susceptible to damage when an earthquake strikes because of how much space they have. When large amounts of space go reinforced, it’s extremely difficult to avoid damage from happening, so the best thing that you can do is invest your time and effort into retrofitting your soft-story building.
This processes is extremely similar to the seismic retrofitting services that we offer but does require a different knowledge base just because of how the building was structured. Retrofitting is beneficial to all buildings, but when it comes to soft-story buildings, we need to be conscious of the space and fully strategize the best way to yield positive results.
